A. Bobby Chhabra, MD, is the recipient of the 2007 University of Virginia Master Educator Award. Dr. Chhabra, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division Head of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery, and Orthopaedic Residency Program Director at the University of Virginia, has been awarded this prestigious medical center honor for his contributions to graduate medical education and competence-based education. Master Educator Award recipients have demonstrated their commitment to graduate medical education by:

 

  1. Serving as major role models for residents and medical students and representing the best of the clinical educational genre;   
  2. Influencing their faculty colleagues and peers regarding the goals and objectives of competency-based education; and
  3. Providing service and leadership to the clinical educational process at the Institutional and National Level.

2007 Virginia Commissioner's Health Care Workforce Award for Distinguished Service Awarded to Cato T. Laurencin, MD, PhD

Dr. Cato Laurencin recieved a 2007 Virginia Commissioner's HealthCare Workforce Award for Distinguished Service last week. Dr. Laurencin's nomination cited his work as mentor to a number of students in the Fellowship Program in Academic Medicine for Minority Students. The program is dedicated to improving the health of low-income and minority populations by increasing the number of minority physicians, and training minority medical students to address the special needs of their communities. Dr. Laurencin has worked to assure the diversity of Virginian's healthcare workforce and has provided many students opportunities that would have been unavailable to them otherwise.

VCU Department of Orthopaedics Update

The VCU Department of Orthopaedic Surgery faculty continues to grow. This academic year sees the addition of three new members in three specialty areas: Victoria Kuester, MD, in Pediatric Orthopaedics, Raj Mounasamy, MD, in Trauma and Lawrence Cohen, MD, in Spine Surgery.

We are finally at our full complement of residents (5 years) and are amazed at the quality of our applicants. We have about 450 applicants for our five slots. This is still a very competitive program in spite of the numbers going into radiology, anesthesia and dermatology. VCU has the busiest trauma center in the state. The severity and volume of trauma is amazing and requires significant faculty clinical work. Bob Adelaar is in his fifth year as Chair of the Orthopaedics Department, and John Cardea, Chair emeritus, is still active in Joint Arthroplasty and teaching.

VCU continues to focus research on Articular Cartilage, PCR Joint Infections, Biomechanics with special emphasis on Shoulder, Elbow, Foot and Ankle. The residents are required to do two research projects during their five years. We are recruiting additional researchers to our lab. The Herman Nachman Distinguished Professorship Endowment in Research is fully funded and we are looking for additional support in endowments to fund our education, clinical and research mission.

VCU continues to grow in clinical volume, with referrals from many Orthopaedist throughout the state. We are a very clinically oriented program that continures to value patient care as a critical portion or our mission.
