PROGRAM TOPICS
This meeting will provide you with a wealth of information about orthopaedic surgery in the state of Virginia that is not available at other meetings or in other venues.
  • Physician Profiling
    Michael Lundberg, Executive Director of Virginia Health Information will present the who? how? why? of Physician Profiling and the interpretation and use of data.
  • AAOS Update
    William Tipton, Jr., M.D., AAOS Executive Director, will discuss the importance and pertinence of the Academy and state societies.
  • Managed Care
    Area orthopaedists present vignettes on local managed care trends and how they are impacting orthopaedic surgeons in their area, followed by a statewide overview.
  • Training Program Update
    Teaching chiefs from UVA, MCV, PNH, and Georgetown programs provide update on current status and trends in orthopaedic education.
  • Pedicle Screw Symposium
    An update on pedicle fixation by several Virginia orthopaedists as well as Dr. Lonstein, followed by case presentations to the panel for discussion.
  • Orthopaedic Internet
    Presentation of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society Home Page on the Internet with information about orthopaedic services over the Internet.
  • "Real Life" Session for Residents
    Discuss private practice issues, contracting and joining practices with Drs. James Andrews, Tom Hulvey and John Barnard. What you really need to know but forgot to ask.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED
Several special activities have been planned on Saturday, April 26. All programs require advance registration and payment. Space is limited, and we would encourage you to not wait to register at the meeting. We cannot guarantee space will be available.

All activities will begin at the Robert Carter House, which is located next to the Governor's Palace on Palace Green. Programs will go on, rain or shine and begin promptly at the times scheduled.

10:00 a.m. Culinary Arts - Edible Decorations
2 hours, limited to 10 people. Fee: $20 per person A Colonial Williamsburg top pastry chef will teach you the "secrets" of making edible marzipan decorations to grace your table. You will mold and shape such things as animals and flowers for table decoration or other creation. Take home your unique decoration - if you don't eat it first!
10:00 a.m. Colonial Revival Gardens
1.5 hours, limited to 20 people. Fee: $15 per person Led by Colonial Williamsburg's horticulturists, on this walking tour you will learn about the fascinating history of the Colonial revival movement in the United States. The tour will focus on the work of landscape architects like Arthur Shurcliff and Alden Hopkins who significantly influenced the design and appearance of the reconstructed gardens of Colonial Williamsburg's early years.
1:30 p.m. Architectural Sleuthing in Williamsburg and Restoration at Colonial Williamsburg
2 hours, limited to 20 people. Fee: $15 per person Architectural historians will help you learn how to read the stories spoken by the 18th-century Williamsburg buildings.
1:30 p.m.Introduction to Archaeology
1.5 hours, limited to 20 people. Fee: $15 per person Learn the basic principles of archaeology and see how ongoing excavations contribute to the restoration of historic Williamsburg. This program combines lectures, tours of the archaeology lab, and hands-on examination of artifacts.
